Regional Commission for Fish Stocking and Water Management

 

Fisheries and Angling Management comprises a set of projects and measures aimed at the sustainable utilisation of the productive potential of water bodies.

Article 6 of the Inland Fisheries Act stipulates:

  1. Any person authorised to fish within a fishing district is obliged to practise rational
    fisheries management.
  2. Rational fisheries management involves utilising the productive potential of water bodies whilst simultaneously aiming to improve the quality of the environment and its resources, in accordance
    with the fisheries management plan setting out the principles of such management.

This means that the objectives of rational fisheries management must be geared towards supporting the environment (biomanipulation), which entails promoting certain fish species whilst eliminating others

The committee’s primary tasks include carrying out integrated measures in three areas:

  • the protection of aquatic ecosystems, including the prevention of pollution,
  • the utilisation of water resources, including, amongst other things, recreational fishing, selective catches, control catches,
  • stocking, aimed at offsetting losses resulting from excessive recreational fishing, and making better use of the natural productivity of water bodies.
  • Assessing applications and allocating waters to fishing clubs and SSRs

The implementation of the above tasks requires close cooperation within the Water Stocking Team and, in particular, involves:

  • determining the profile and timing of stocking,
  • determining the fish species and quantities of stocking material,
  • supervising the procurement of spawning stock and cooperating with fish farmers,
  • supervising the preparation of fisheries management plans for rivers and lakes,
  • drawing up annual stocking plans for the waters of our District,
  • defining the rules for recreational fishing in rivers and lakes,
  • co-operating with scientific and research centres in the region and nationwide,
  • co-operating with other entities authorised to carry out fishing activities or fishing companies regarding uniform rules for recreational fishing.
