On 24–25 June this year, this time on Lake Miejskie Duże, the 17th ‘Człuchów Commune Mayor’s Cup’ Angling Competition took place. The competition was organised by the Człuchów branch of the Polish Angling Association (PZW). Twenty-nine competitors took part in the competition. Fishing took place continuously from 6.30 pm on Friday until 11.00 am on Saturday. Only fish meeting the size requirements and outside the closed season were scored, provided they were over 20 cm. Bleak were excluded from the scoring. Both bottom fishing and float fishing methods were used, with two rods cast simultaneously.
The weather was fine and spirits were high. Turnout was also good. The competition for the mayor’s cup attracts a great deal of interest every year. The catch consisted mainly of bream, but there were also a few fine roach. In addition, a great many fish that did not reach the required size of 20 cm were released.
Of the 29 competitors, 15 caught fish that counted towards the score. After the first weigh-in at 9.30 pm, Mateusz Malecki was in the lead with 1,070 points. Apart from him, four other people also scored points. In the morning, the situation changed dramatically. Piotr Białek, fishing from stand no. 27, caught over 12 kg of fine bream and thus secured first place. The fish were biting in the middle of the night – albeit a short one.
Final competition standings:
1st place: Piotr Białek 12,215 points;
2nd place: Józef Graczyk 3,936 points;
3rd place: Piotr Krause 3,483 points;
4th place: Mateusz Malecki 2,790 points;
5th place: Hubert Lange 2,190 points;
6th place: Paweł Jeżewski 2,000 points.
Piotr Białek was also crowned the angler who caught the largest fish. His biggest bream weighed 1,370 grams.
The closing ceremony and summary of the event took place in the presence of Paweł Gibczyński, the Commune Head. The main sponsor of the event was the Commune of Człuchów. All competitors received commemorative gifts, whilst the winners were awarded certificates, trophies and prizes. The competition was judged by the club’s chairman, Karol Dziemiańczyk.
The competition must be considered a great success. Next year will see the 18th edition.
