In
September, staff from the Institute of Fisheries Research’s Migratory Fish Department in Gdańsk carried out sampling exercises to
monitor the numbers of salmonid fry in the Słupia river basin.
They managed to
catch over a dozen salmon fry – at the parr stage.
These young
salmon will migrate to the sea next spring, only to return to the Słupia as spawners after two or three
years.
We would like to remind
anglers that there is a total ban on killing or removing salmon from PZW Słupsk waters. If an angler
catches a salmon, they must release it without fail. When handling a caught salmon,
with care; where possible, do not lift the fish out of the water;
the hook or treble hook should be removed from the mouth
whilst keeping the salmon in the water, and before releasing it, hold the fish with its mouth
facing upstream so that the current flowing over its gills helps to oxygenate the salmon’s body more quickly.
